Pursuing Your Goals

"There's no shortcut to learning a craft; you just have to put the years in." - Kylie Minogue

In an age where we are more impatient than ever and we want to be able to learn a new skill in seconds rather than taking the time to do it well, it is important to remember that learning something properly is always going to take time.

Patience is a virtue. With patience we can put in the time and effort it takes to develop skills properly and then improve upon them. Without patience it is easy to give up, to stop trying. When we give up on something because it takes too much time, or because we find it difficult it can sometimes have a negative effect on our mental health. It can make you feel powerless and like you can’t achieve anything, but that’s not true. The best way to get past this is to keep going and push through.

When you manage to persevere and dedicate yourself to a task, or to developing your skills, you will find the outcome has a much more positive effect on your life. After all, if something is easy to learn then there would not be much satisfaction in learning how to do it. Even if you never manage to get the result you set out for, achieving small goals and persevering through failures can help you to become a more optimistic and resilient person. A positive attitude can go a long way in helping you lead a happier life.

Often it feels easier to just give up, but we have to change our mindset and realise that that is not going to be beneficial in the grand scheme of things. When J.K. Rowling wrote Harry Potter she was going through a hard time, writing her book in coffee shops in Edinburgh. Her book was rejected by twelve different publishers before being picked up by a then-small publishing house who weren’t sure how it would sell. Now she is one of the most successful and influential authors in the world and none of it would have happened without her dedication and perseverance.

Sometimes there are no shortcuts, no easy ways to do things quickly, you just need to work hard and, by doing so, you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. It doesn’t mean you have to dedicate every waking hour to whatever it is you’re trying to learn, but consistency and perseverance can prevail and, in the long run, will help you become a more determined individual.

Take this as an opportunity to dedicate yourself to what you’re passionate about. If you’re struggling, stick with it. It will be worth it in the end. Work hard and refuse to give up. Don’t rush through your life so fast that you miss the chance to focus on the things that will make you happy.

“…you just need to work hard…”
